| Yasaka Shrine Festival |
 |
The Yasaka Shrine Festival is a summer festival
held at the Yasaka Shrine on the last Saturday
in July. During the festival we pray for
a rich yield of rice in autumn, and there
are a lot of things to see. A portable shrine
is carried around the area, and traditional
festival music is played on temporary stages
and on floats which are transported around
the parish. The streets are lined with a
variety of food stalls, and many spectators
come from all over the city to take part
in the festival. |

| Iris Festival |
 |
The Iris Festival is held in the "Shiki
no Sato" garden in mid June. This
is the
season when the irises are in full
bloom,
and during the festival you can enjoy
200
different kinds of them. There also
is a
flea-market, live music, a parade and
a performance
of the "Dance of Moriya", a dance
in a
traditional Japanese style. |

| Sports Festival |
 |
The Sports Festival is held on the last Saturday
of October on the grounds of one of the schools
in Moriya. For this festival Moriya is divided
into ten districts, and they compete with
each other during relay races, rope pulling
and other contests for the winner's flag.
There is a performance of the drum and fife
corps of one of the elementary schools in
city, and there are food stalls as well as
complementary rice balls. It is a festival
where all the people in town can enjoy themselves
and have a good time. |

| Half Marathon |
 |
The start and finish lines of the Half Marathon
held on a Sunday in January or February each
year are located next to the City Hall and
the course is layed out mostly in the town
area. Apart from the half marathon distance
of 13 miles or 21 km you can enter in competitions
for two, three or five kilometers. The participants
come from all over Japan, and their number
presently has risen to more than 4,000. |
